Laura Easey Jones - Biography

I received my bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in 1998. However, I had been taking art classes in various mediums since I started college in 1972 at UW-Milwaukee. I feel an artist should continue to learn throughout life. My teacher, Mario Rueda, whom I studied with in Los Angeles from 1991 to 1996, has my undying love and admiration for teaching me how to paint. Maestro Rueda is a descendant of the John Singer Sargent School. He taught at L.A. Trade Tech and a fellow artist convinced me to take a class with him because he was a master painter. I had already had three years of University credits but I took the class anyway and went on to take many more. He taught me to see value, shapes, planes and light sources and to always, “Look more, paint less.” After he retired some of us followed him to his studio to study from him there. Altogether I studied about five years with him.

I have worked in stone carving and clay for many years and after 14 years in Los Angeles a large commission in limestone brought me back to my hometown Milwaukee. I was a member of Common Ground, a Milwaukee based sculpture group and M.A.R.N in its early years. In 2004, my steel and stone piece, “Potential” was featured at the Wisconsin Lutheran College campus in an outdoor show called Wisconsin Presents. It also appeared in the outdoor Artscapes in Milwaukee’s Third Ward in 2005 and 2010.

Stewart Johnson, set designer and artist, hired me to paint scenery at the Modjeska Theatre in Milwaukee from 1999 until 2007 when he sold the theatre. My painting, sculpture and theatre background came in handy for executing his set designs. A very generous artist, Mr. Johnson allowed me to design small parts of the sets used in their productions and he gave me time off to pursue my own art.

The Gallery Night in Milwaukee is a popular event. I have curated for the Italian Community Center for about six years, bringing in artists that have been influenced by Italy or are of Italian descent.

My murals can be seen in various places in Milwaukee and the outlying areas. Among them are Ingrilli’s Restaurant, Brio, located downtown, and Georgie Porgie’s in Oak Creek and Racine. The Italian Community Center commissioned me to do four figures from the Sistine Chapel on 9 foot panels. They were installed in 2005.

Ho conseguito la mia laurea in Arte all’Universita’ Loyola Marymount di Los Angeles nel 1998. Comunque avevo gia’ frequentato classi di arte sin dal 1972 quando ho iniziato i miei studi universitari all’Universita’ di UW-Milwaukee. Penso che un’artista dovrebbe continuare ad imparare durante il corso di tutta la vita. Il mio insegnate, Mario Rueda, con il quale ho studiato a Los Angeles dal 1991 al 1996, ha la mia ammirazione infinita per avermi insegnato a pitturare. Il professor Rueda e’ un discendente della scuola John Singer Sargent. Ha insegnato al L.A. Trade Tech ed un amico artista mi ha convinto a frequentare una delle sue classi con lui, in quanto era un pittore rinomato. Ero al mio terzo anno di universita’, ma ho comunque frequentato la classe ed ho continuato a frequentarne molte altre. Mi ha insegnato a visualizzare il valore, le forme, superfici e fondi di luce ed a “Osservare di piu’ e dipingere di meno.” Quando il professor Mario Ruedo ando’ in pensione, alcuni dei suoi studenti, fra i quali io, lo continuammo a studiare con lui e ad apprendere da lui direttamente. Ho studiato circa cinque anni con lui.

Ho lavorato intagliando pietra ed argilla per molti anni e dopo 14 anni a Los Angeles una commissione per un grande lavoro in pietra calcarea mi ha riportato alla mia citta’ di natale, Milwaukee,Wisconsin. Ero membro del Common Ground, un gruppo di scultura e del M.A.R.N durante i suoi primi anni di esistenza. Nel 2004, il mio lavoro in acciaio e pietra chiamato “Potential” e’ stato esposto all’Universita Luterana di Wisconsin in una mostra all’aperto chiamata Wisconsin Presents.

Stewart Johnson, scenografo ed artista, mi ha assunto per dipingere lo scenario al Modjeska Theatre a Milwaukee dal 1999 al 2007, anno in cui ha venduto il teatro. Le mie pitture, le mie sculture e lo sfondo del teatro sono serviti ad eseguire le scenografie. Un artista molto generoso, Mr. Johnson mi ha permesso di disegnare piccole parti dei set usati nelle produzioni e mi ha dato tempo per lavorare sui miei propri lavori artistici.

La Gallery Night a Milwaukee e’ un evento popolare. Mi sono presa cura dell’apporto artistico alla Italian Community Center per circa sei anni, portando artisti che sono stati influenzati dall’Italia o che sono di discendenza italiana.

I miei murales possono essere visti in vari posti a Milwaukee e luoghi circostanti. Tra questi ci sono il ristorante Ingrilli, Brio, che si trova al centro della citta’ e Georgie Porgie a Oak Creek e Racine. L’Italian Community Center mi ha commissionata a creare Quattro figure dalla Cappella Sistina su pannelli di nove piedi. Questi ultimo sono stati installati nel 2005.
